Polishing refers to the whole process whereby a particular surface is rubbed to obtain a spectacular reflection. This process of polishing requires an abrasive and a wax like substance. The abrasive or the glass polishing powder is Cerium Oxide. Cerium Oxide is a naturally occurring substance that is found along with the metals. It has a yellowish white colour that is pale in appearance.

Polishing Powder(Cerium Oxide)

Cerium Oxide is a compound obtained when the earth metal cerium is oxidised. It is also called ceric oxide, dioxide, cerium dioxide and by some other names. Bearing an appearance of pale yellowish with colour, cerium oxide is primarily used for glass polishing. The compound is famous and commercialised for the purpose of glass polishing but has the versatility to be used in other areas as well. Its application as an intermediary in the purification process to obtain a metal from its ore can be cited as an example of its alternative usage.

The cerium is an earth metal that isfound associated with other rare earth elements. 2 principle ores of cerium are monazite and bastnaesite. After having separated the metal ions, ceramic is extracted from the mixture by adding oxidants to it and then adjusting the pH level. This process of extraction aims at exploiting the low solubility of cerium oxide and the fact that other elements do not oxidise easily.

Cerium Oxide as a Polishing powder

The main usage of ceria is as a polishing agent. It is mostly used for chemical-mechanical polishing or CMP.  This compound has replaced several other oxides that have traditionally been used, mainly Iron oxide and Zirconia.

Shortcomings of Ceria:

Oxygen vacancies can said to be the primary defects in Ceria. An increase in oxygen defects in turn leads to an increase in the oxide diffusion rate. This increases the ionic conductivity.
